5th Grade Math

Your Complete Path to 5th Grade Math Achievement

Our small group program is divided into two distinct parts to meet the needs of students at different stages in their learning journey.

Part 1: Essentials reinforces foundational math concepts, providing targeted instruction to build confidence and prepare students for more advanced skills.

Part 2: Enrichment offers the opportunity to explore more complex topics and apply concepts in new ways. Whether your child is starting with the fundamentals or looking to expand on prior knowledge, both are designed to provide engaging, small-group learning tailored to their grade level and goals.

Enrollment in either part is flexible, allowing students to join directly into the Essentials or Enrichment program based on their current needs and proficiency. Explore the cohorts below to find the best fit for your child’s schedule and academic goals.

Part 1: Essentials

The 5th Grade Essentials curriculum strengthens core mathematical concepts such as multiplication, division, and comparing fractions, preparing students for more complex operations with fractions and decimals. Each session builds confidence and mastery, equipping students with the foundational skills they need to thrive in more advanced math topics. – Download Syllabus

Part 2: Enrichment

The 5th Grade Enrichment curriculum extends learning into advanced fraction and decimal operations, including real-world applications and data analysis. Students deepen their understanding of these concepts while gaining insights into key middle school topics like ratios and proportional relationships. This part of the program solidifies critical skills while laying the groundwork for future success. – Download Syllabus

Format

Our program is structured to provide a balanced blend of individual attention and collaborative learning. Each cohort consists of 4-8 students, allowing tutors to give focused guidance while also encouraging peer interaction. Sessions are held twice a week for one hour each, creating a rhythm that keeps students engaged and allows them to steadily build and reinforce skills over the 8-week course.

This structured cadence supports both academic consistency and progress, with each session building on the last to ensure deep comprehension of foundational math concepts. The small group format benefits students by enabling them to observe varied problem-solving approaches, discuss strategies with their peers, and gain confidence in a supportive, community-oriented environment.

With this setup, students not only learn from the instructor but also gain insight by actively participating in group discussions and hearing diverse perspectives, making the learning experience more dynamic and impactful. Our goal is to provide a structured yet flexible environment that nurtures growth, collaboration, and confidence in math.

See It in Action

Curious about what a small group tutoring session looks like? Watch this short video of a 4th-grade math session to get a glimpse into how our program works. You’ll see students actively discussing and solving problems together, with guidance from our experienced tutor.

This recording highlights how we foster collaboration and peer learning, allowing students to take the lead using engaging digital manipulatives. It’s a great way to understand how we create an interactive and supportive environment for meaningful learning.

Session Structure and Support Time

Each session in our program is designed to be one hour long, with 50 minutes dedicated to focused instruction. The final 10 minutes are set aside for student reflection and session wrap-up. During this time, the tutor will guide students in reflecting on what they learned, sharing areas of challenge or success, and reinforcing key takeaways from the lesson. This helps solidify understanding while fostering self-awareness in learning.

If parents or guardians have questions or concerns about their child’s progress, we kindly ask that they avoid raising them during the session time to respect the group dynamic and ensure smooth session flow. Instead, we encourage families to email us directly at familytutoring@cignition.com, and we will promptly coordinate with the tutor to address your inquiries or provide additional support as needed. This helps maintain a focused and uninterrupted learning environment for all students while handling parents' concerns effectively.

This approach ensures that every session stays focused and productive while still providing opportunities for meaningful engagement and support.

How We Measure Progress

In our small group program, student progress is monitored through ongoing mastery checks embedded in each lesson rather than traditional pre- and post-assessments. We understand that tests can place unnecessary pressure on students and shift the focus toward test performance rather than true understanding. Instead, our tutors assess mastery of each standard and topic in real-time, ensuring that students have fully grasped a concept before moving forward.

At the end of each session, tutors provide detailed feedback on each student’s progress, noting areas of strength, any challenges encountered, and recommendations for additional support if needed. This feedback, which is shared with parents through our parent dashboard, includes updates on standards mastery, engagement levels, and any observations that may be beneficial for supporting your child’s learning journey. Our goal is to provide a supportive, pressure-free environment that focuses on meaningful, long-term growth.

Refund Policy and Program Withdrawal

We understand that situations may arise where a student needs to withdraw from the program. Families are eligible for a full refund for our small group tutoring if they choose to unenroll within the first two weeks of the program. After this period, refunds are no longer available.

To officially withdraw from the program, you must contact Family Tutoring at Cignition directly at familytutoring@cignition.com. Tutors are not authorized to process unenrollments, so all requests must be completed through our Family Tutoring team.

Additionally, if fewer than 75% of planned seats in a particular cohort are reserved exactly one week before the scheduled start date, the cohort may be canceled.

In this event, the families who have already enrolled can choose from the following options:

  1. Full Refund: Receive a complete refund for your payment if you decide not to proceed with the cohort.

  2. Apply to One-to-One Tutoring: Transfer your payment toward our personalized one-to-one tutoring services to ensure uninterrupted academic support for your child.

  3. Roll Over to a Future Cohort: You can apply your payment to a future cohort that better suits your schedule or preferences.
Enrollment and Attendance Policy

Full payment is required upfront to secure a spot in our small group tutoring program. This ensures your child’s place in the cohort, as spots are limited.

Please Note: Tuition covers the entire program duration and is not prorated based on attendance. Due to the structured nature of the program, we are unable to provide refunds or makeup sessions for missed classes.

In the event that your child misses a session, a recording of the session and the associated lesson materials will be made available upon request. This allows your child to review the material independently, stay on track, and be fully prepared for the next session.

We are committed to providing a consistent and cohesive learning experience for all students.
