TeachFX
Cignition and TeachFX are collaborating on a project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to better understand student engagement in tutoring sessions and increase student engagement by providing automated instructional feedback to tutors. The project will adapt and improve TeachFX’s existing automated teacher feedback technology for use in Cignition online tutoring sessions, with a specific focus on enabling tutors to better engage students who are Black, Latinx and/or low-income and who are receiving math tutoring.
Assistments
‘21-’22 school year grant-funded partnership through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for BCPS (7 different 6th-grade school sites){1 teacher at each school, a total of 229 students, 24 sessions over 12 weeks}. The main focus was to evaluate the efficacy of the use of Assistments dashboard on group learning. Was there a difference in growth between those who had access to the dashboard and those who did not? And how much?
Phonics Hero
Cignition uses Phonics Hero No-Prep Phonics lessons as part of our K-3 ELA Curriculum.

Digital Promise
Digital Promise works at the intersection of education leaders, researchers, and technology developers to improve learning opportunities for all. Cignition has been a DP partner since 2018, collaborating on industry-leading research on High Impact math tutoring for underserved students.
Mathematica
Mathematica has acted as a third-party advisor on both of our Randomized Controlled Trials. They coordinate with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and supervise the design and analysis of our studies.
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Cignition has been collaborating with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on the research and development of bold innovations in math learning since 2018. We’ve been awarded four grants for research spanning nearly five years. Our initial grant study led to the industry’s leading results for virtual math tutoring. Our second study, in collaboration with ASSISTments, focused on effective data-informed integrations and practices to improve student outcomes. Our third study focuses on optimizing collaboration and outcomes for small group virtual tutoring (RCT results in 2022). Our fourth research project is in collaboration with TeachFX, improving tutor/student collaboration through data-informed instructional approaches.
Overdeck Foundation
In collaboration with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Overdeck Foundation is supporting Cignition’s R&D for high-impact small group collaborative tutoring.
Schmidt Futures
The initial development of data-informed tutoring, including the capstone Randomized Controlled Trial (our first RCT) was supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, CZI, and Schmidt Futures.
CZI (Chan Zuckerberg Initiative)
In collaboration with Schmidt Futures and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, CZI supported Cignition’s early research and development into bold innovations in mathematics education.
